You decide what composition(s) you want to conduct with the Institute’s Laboratory Orchestra.

  • Why choose your own repertoire? Score and part preparation are key skills for any conductor. You will be required, with consultation and coaching by the Institute, to select and prepare your score and parts from start to finish.

  • This unique structure allows you to select your own works to conduct with the Lab Orchestra. You may use this opportunity for repertoire preparation, audition videos, auditions, and more.

  • You will propose your repertoire when you apply. If you are unable to select repertoire, consultation is available. Repertoire is subject to approval by the Institute Director.

  • Your proposed composition(s) may be of any length, keeping in mind that you will be limited by your allotted time with the Orchestra.

  • Maximum available instrumentation is 2222 / 4231 / T / Percussion / Strings. Some variation in instrumentation may be considered in consultation with the Director.

Scores and Parts

Score and orchestral-part preparation is an important skill when leading an orchestra. In this new program, you will learn how to obtain and provide the proper music materials for your work with the orchestra.

  • The cost of the score(s) and original parts are your responsibility.

  • You will provide your personal score and orchestral parts, both digital and paper. This will be done in consultation with the Institute. Guidance is available.

    • Part duplication may be arranged with FILARMONIKA Music Publishing. Link to the FILARMONIKA website here. Parts printed through FILARMONIKA will be delivered to the institute with free shipping.

    • Digital parts will be posted at the Institute’s website to facilitate advance preparation by Laboratory Orchestra musicians.

    • Printed parts are for the Lab Orchestra’s use when you are on the podium during the workshop’s orchestra sessions.

    • Any costs involved in acquiring and preparing the score(s) and parts will be your responsibility.
